The Drops Market:
A Community-Led Hub For Cultural Regeneration
Market Hall Design, 2025
This project is the design of The Drops Market, a modular cultural hub located along the canal in King’s Cross.
I was interested in how public spaces can bring people together through everyday experiences, and I wanted to explore how a market could become more than just a place for commerce. While walking around King’s Cross, I noticed the stark contrast between the busy Coal Drops Yard and the quiet, unused canal-side. That contrast became the starting point for this project.
I wanted to create a space that could connect these two different urban rhythms something open, adaptable, and rooted in community. I used recycled shipping containers to create a light, flexible structure with folding doors and rooftop spaces. These elements allow the market to shift throughout the day and across seasons, responding to different uses and people. Instead of designing a fixed commercial layout, I focused on how the space could grow, host events, and invite people to feel part of it. Through this project, I tried to think about architecture not just as form, but as a system for participation a space that listens to the city and its people, and that can keep evolving over time
